A loose termination can create serious heat without drawing enough current to trip the breaker. The reason is I²R heating: as current rises, the heat produced at that added resistance rises with the square of the current. That is why correct torque and a clean, solid connection matter just as much as conductor ampacity.

ā˜€ļø Extreme Heat Put a 17-State Grid Region on Emergency Orders

On July 26, the Department of Energy issued an emergency order covering the Southwest Power Pool as hot weather pushed the regional grid toward a reliability emergency. The order lets SPP dispatch specified generation and call on backup units as a last resort before or during its highest emergency level. DOE says more than 35 gigawatts of unused backup generation remain available nationwide, and this order runs through August 3. For lineworkers, plant electricians and service crews, it is a live reminder that peak-heat reliability depends on equipment being ready when the call comes...

A new ELECTRI International roadmap looks at where small modular reactors could create work for electrical contractors as power demand rises. These factory-built reactor modules generally produce less than 300 megawatts each and lean on the same prefabrication, BIM coordination and repeatable assemblies many contractors already use. The opportunity extends beyond installation into distribution, communications, commissioning, cybersecurity and long-term maintenance. The projects are still emerging, but the capabilities that prepare a shop for them also strengthen today's industrial and mission-critical work...

šŸ  Heat Pumps Are Moving More Home Energy Work onto the Electrical Side

Electrical Contractor reports that a new ACEEE study puts electric heat pumps near the top of the list for cutting energy waste and managing rising peak demand. The study estimates that efficiency upgrades could avoid about $4.8 trillion in wasted energy and related costs through 2050, or nearly $31,000 per household over 25 years. Because most heat pumps are electric, broader adoption means more attention to service capacity, branch circuits, controls and load management. For residential electricians, efficiency policy is increasingly turning into panel and power-planning work...
