The Outlet

Hi there,

Welcome to this week's edition of The Outlet. Here are some sparks to keep you informed and entertained!

🔦 Fun Fact

The ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) was invented by Charles Dalziel, an electrical engineering professor at UC Berkeley, in 1961. It was first required by the NEC in 1971 for swimming pool areas, then expanded over the decades to bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor outlets. Before widespread GFCI adoption, electrocutions in wet locations were among the most common residential electrical fatalities — today they've dropped by more than 80%.

Why do electricians make great musicians?

They're really good at finding the right ohm.

🏗️ AI Data Centers Are Creating a "Life or Death" Electrician Shortage

As tech giants race to build AI data centers, a severe shortage of qualified electricians has emerged as a critical bottleneck — described by the IBEW as a "life or death" threat to companies like Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft. Electrical work accounts for 45–70% of total data center construction costs, and industry projections call for more than 300,000 new electricians over the next decade. The workforce gap is already creating premium career opportunities, with Google pledging $15 million to the Electrical Training Alliance to train 30,000 new apprentices by 2030. For journeymen and apprentices entering the field right now, the timing couldn't be better...

📈 DOE Announces $1.9 Billion to Modernize the Electrical Grid

The Department of Energy's SPARK program has released approximately $1.9 billion to upgrade the nation's transmission infrastructure as electricity demand is projected to grow 5.7% by 2030 — the fastest pace since the 1960s. The investment focuses on reconductoring: replacing existing lines with higher-capacity conductors paired with advanced transmission technologies to expand capacity without building entirely new infrastructure. Concept papers are due April 2, 2026, with project selections expected in August. For electricians, this signals a sustained surge in transmission and grid-hardening work over the next several years...

⚙️ Bipartisan REWIRE Act Targets Grid Modernization and Red Tape

Senators McCormick (R-PA) and Welch (D-VT) introduced the bipartisan REWIRE Act to streamline permitting and accelerate the upgrade of America's electric grid. The legislation aims to double the capacity of existing transmission lines at a fraction of the cost of new construction, leveraging advanced reconductoring technology to add 5,000 miles of high-capacity lines per year. Projections suggest the approach could save up to $180 billion in grid costs by 2050. It's rare bipartisan energy legislation — and a sign that both parties recognize the grid can't keep up with current demand without major structural investment...
